3. A STRATEGY TO ADOPT: Addressing microaggressions in the workplace. ?

How to create a culture of inclusion and belonging?

If unaddressed, microaggressions can provoke exclusion and result in low levels of engagement, productivity and retention.

The SurveyMonkey study shows that 7 in 10 employees would be upset by disrespectful interactions, and 50% said the action would make them consider leaving their job.

Gartner shares a strategy for HR professionals to tackle microaggressions. It includes:

1. Training managers how to spot a microaggression. It can help increase manager awareness of common microaggressions in the workplace so they can spot and address them as they arise.

2. Coaching managers on how to create space for employees to share personal experiences. Managers should foster a psychologically safe place for underrepresented employees to share their personal experiences.

3. Practising empathy. Managers should practise active listening and to pay attention to employees’ tone of voice, body language and context.

4. Having a list of stakeholders and resources managers can use. To handle manager-employee emotions, managers should be able to connect with other leaders, leverage ERGs or direct their reports to employee assistance programs and counseling services.

5. Addressing questions and concerns efficiently. Companies should have a process for employees to report microaggressions, criteria for handling employee questions, concerns or allegations, established communication channels with various functions.
