4.A STRATEGY TO ADOPT: How to foster gender equity? ?

Many researches show a correlation between gender equity and organizational success, pointing at certain obstacles for women. Bloomberg’s Gender Equality Index helps bring transparency to gender-related practices and policies at publicly-listed companies worldwide.

How to overcome obstacles which hinder gender equity in the workplace?

AAUW suggests 5 strategies to foster gender equity. They include:

1. Conducting regular pay audits. Analyzing compensation by gender/race allows companies to identify inequities and take measures to correct them.

2. Abandoning the practice of using salary history to set wages. Instead, companies should use market research to determine what a particular position is worth to an organization.

3. Adopting practices and policies to encourage salary transparency. Pay secrecy policies – which prevent employees from discussing or inquiring about wages – should be abandoned.

4. Fostering a culture of fairness & equity and building it around core values. Companies should review their hiring and promotion practices to make sure women have equal opportunities.

5. Ensuring workplace flexibility. It’s vitally important for companies to adapt to contemporary life, so that women and men could better balance the demands of their home life with their jobs.

5.AN APPROACH TO FOLLOW: Be careful with layoffs. ?

Companies are starting to lay off people again.

According to the USNews, companies that shed more than 10% of their workforce experienced an average 38% share price drop.

Josh Bersin shares 5 rules how to approach layoffs carefully. They are:

1. Don’t do it at all. It is easy to let people go but slow & hard to have them come back.

2. Mind damaging your internal culture. Every employee terminated is likely to become a customer, a reference or a rehire. Therefore, treat them with respect, give them the best exit package and emphasize that this was only a business decision.

3. Ensure the process is fair and well communicated. Employees deserve a fair, respectful and transparent process.

4. Communicate with management clearly. Prepare managers how to face emotions, anger and a certain amount of bad behavior.

5. Don’t do it at all.

? Dive deeper into the insights here. Why not to bring people together, set up internal working groups and figure out how to reinvent the company from within?
